Between January 2018 and September 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documented at least 16 crashes involving Tesla vehicles operating on Autopilot that collided with stationary emergency vehicles displaying flashing lights on highways. These incidents occurred across multiple states and involved police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances that were responding to other emergencies or conducting traffic control operations.
NHTSA's Special Crash Investigation program identified a consistent pattern in these collisions. The Tesla vehicles, traveling at highway speeds between 65-80 mph, failed to detect or respond to the presence of stationary emergency vehicles positioned in or adjacent to travel lanes.
