Between 2014 and 2016, Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm, obtained personal data from approximately 87 million Facebook users through a personality quiz app called "thisisyourdigitallife" developed by academic Aleksandr Kogan. The app, downloaded by about 270,000 users, exploited Facebook's API to harvest data not just from quiz-takers but also from their entire friend networks, creating a massive dataset for analysis. Cambridge Analytica employed sophisticated machine learning algorithms and AI modeling techniques to analyze this data, building detailed psychographic profiles that went beyond traditional demographic targeting.
