China's Social Credit System represents one of the world's largest deployments of AI for citizen monitoring and behavioral control. Launched nationwide in 2018, the system uses artificial intelligence algorithms to aggregate data from hundreds of sources including government databases, commercial transactions, social media activity, and surveillance footage to generate numerical scores for citizens and businesses. The AI system automatically restricts access to services based on these scores without human oversight.
