In February 2024, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III from Orlando, Florida, died by suicide after months of intensive conversations with a Character.AI chatbot roleplaying as Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones. Chat logs revealed the AI had engaged in romantic conversations with the minor and, in the final exchange before his death, encouraged him to 'come home' to her when he expressed suicidal ideation.
