In August 2019, criminals executed one of the first documented cases of AI voice deepfake fraud against a UK-based energy company. The attackers used commercially available voice cloning technology to create a convincing audio replica of the parent company's German CEO, targeting the UK subsidiary's chief executive.
The attack began with a phone call to the UK energy firm's CEO, who believed he was speaking directly with his boss at the parent company. The AI-generated voice clone successfully mimicked the German CEO's accent, speech patterns, and mannerisms with sufficient accuracy to fool the victim.
